DISABILITY IS A BADGE OF HONOR, NOT A LABEL.
Creating Strength and Empowerment for People with Disabilities
Claiming Disability Inc wants to spread our messages of empowerment and compassion. We believe that a single action can make a difference in the community, and that shared experiences can greatly impact inclusion. Through advocacy and outreach activities, our team and our community of supporters works to embrace diversity and disability as an asset toward the greater good.
CLAIMING DISABILITY INC AT A GLANCE
Helping people find strength and courage to celebrate disability
We know that living with a disability isn’t easy -- between the heartbreaks of inaccessibility, prejudices, and chronic pain – and such experiences can mean working hard to create space in the working world and to be seen and heard everywhere else in our communities.
At Claiming Disability, Inc our mentors and motivational speakers will bring fresh perspectives from disabled life as we educate and inspire women and men — in different stages and phases of life — to proudly claim their disabilities, share their stories, overcome challenging circumstances, and use their differences to make a big impact.
We pledge to help all people feel seen and heard and to create connections within their fabulous disabled community.
Wearing Disability Like a Badge of Honor
Claiming Disability, Inc. uses active, public engagement and multi-media to advocate for disability inclusion and equality. We encourage people to wear disability like a “badge of honor,” and we seek to empower people with disabilities (PWDs) through motivational speaking, diversity coaching, and arts and creativity designed by the disabled community.
Through targeted outreach and education, Claiming Disability, Inc. fosters a more active and empowered community of people who claim disability as a personal and professional identity and asset rather than limitations or restrictions to opportunities, successes, and health. We believe in supporting physical and emotional wellness for PWDs who face discrimination, isolation, and disconnection to community resources.
MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKING AND MENTORSHIP
At Claiming Disability Inc, we believe in an all-embracing thought process; a mindset that celebrates disability — and all differences pertaining to lifestyle — as assets and equalizers rather than limitations or restrictions to opportunities, successes, and health.
People with disabilities are incredibly creative, proficient, and accomplished men and women who have important perspectives and purposes.
With enthusiasm and experience, Erin and Mollie are passionate about sharing their own stories of life with disabilities, and bringing education and encouragement to high schools, colleges and universities, workplaces, conferences, professional development events, and more. Hello, I'm Erin!
I've mastered the art of being disabled and fabulous while simultaneously using a walker and occasionally a wheelchair. I also write for The Mighty, a writing platform for people with disabilities, where our voices and stories can be heard in a big way! Check it out!
We need diverse literature. Every story I have seen about disabilities has the same narrative. "A special girl with special gifts struggling through life with Cerebral Palsy." With the creation of shows like "Special" on Netflix and "Speechless," that dialogue is beginning to change. There are new, fresh, innovative stories about disabled lives waiting to be told. Not every disabled person's life is like the "Miracle worker," and that should be celebrated. There's pride, struggle, romance, taboo, etc. all interconnected in a disabled narrative. Let's celebrate differences, but not in a way that elicits pity, but creates meaning human connection and understanding.
Hi, I'm Mollie!
I am a 33-year-old woman, juggling a career in PR and marketing, Claiming Disability Inc initiatives, and an over-flowing social calendar. And I do it all on wheels.
My physical disability has never stopped me from reaching for all the things I want in life, but it has made it a little more challenging to grab and hold on.
The older I get, confidence comes much more naturally. It’s taken a long time to fill the space that I’m in now, and I would have gotten here sooner had I heard a voice whose perception and perspectives I could relate to more closely.
I write a blog and for a few internationally-known print and online magazines; I hope to be that voice for many more women like me, fighting self-doubt and stereotypes for the sake of love and everything that makes them happy.
